NILON Beryl (nee Dowdell)

Beryl Nilon (née Dowdell) celebrated her 100th birthday in July 2024. Beryl was born in Gnowangerup in Western Australia (WA) and is a veteran of the Second World War.
In October 1942, Beryl enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF). She completed her training in Busselton and was then based at Pearce Air Force Base in Bullsbrook and at Port Pirie in South Australia (SA). Beryl was involved in nursing returned Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) personnel who had been badly burned or wounded.
While serving, Beryl met RAAF warrant officer Geoffrey ‘Geoff’ Bede Nilon. The couple married in August 1944. Beryl discharged from the WAAAF in January 1945, having reached the rank of aircraftwomen.

After the war, Beryl and Geoff applied for a war service farm in Kojonup, WA. They raised their five children there. When Geoff sadly died in 2000, Beryl left Kojonup and now spends time living with her children, in either WA, NSW or SA.
Beryl enjoys gardening and likes growing and arranging flowers. She also loves washing and ironing clothes, listening to music and travelling.
And the secret to Beryl’s long life? She says keep busy and active, don’t dwell on the past, be adventurous, surround yourself with young people, don’t smoke, enjoy a glass of red or bubbles each day, but mostly, enjoy the love, care, and support of family.
